Mechanical Engineer / Lead Designer

About:

We’re seeking a Mechanical Engineer / Lead Designer who thrives in a high-impact, hands-on environment and is passionate about taking projects from initial concept through to final delivery. This role is ideal for someone who loves both designing and solving problems on the shop floor, and who wants to be the go-to technical expert across multiple teams.

You’ll be leading the design and drafting process for complex rotating equipment systems—owning your work from "cradle to grave." With projects ranging from $10K to $1M and 30–70 running at a time, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring precision, collaboration, and timely execution.

Beyond technical expertise, this role is about leadership and growth. You’ll mentor junior drafters, work shoulder-to-shoulder with experienced engineers, and step into high-pressure situations to deliver creative, efficient design solutions. If you’re someone who enjoys solving real-world engineering challenges, wants to grow into a senior leadership or partnership role, and values a stable, respectful, and collaborative team environment—this is the opportunity for you.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Drafting Leadership

  • Lead the drafting and design process for complex rotating equipment systems, managing projects from concept through to completion ("cradle to grave").

  • Serve as the primary designer responsible for developing high-quality engineering drawings, delegating detail work to junior drafters as required.

  • Maintain a hands-on approach to design work while ensuring consistency, accuracy, and compliance with industry standards.

Project Management & Execution

  • Oversee full project lifecycles, including procurement of materials, guiding quality teams, and ensuring timely delivery of design packages.

    • $10K to $1M

    • Managing 30-70 projects at a time (depending on the scale and size)

  • Coordinate closely with internal engineers, shop floor teams, and external EPCs or clients to ensure seamless project execution.

  • Step in to troubleshoot issues during fabrication and assembly, resolving design-fit problems quickly and efficiently.

Team Development & Collaboration

  • Work closely with and be mentored by senior technical leads to grow into a future Lead Technical Engineer.

  • Collaborate with a team of 4–6 designers and drafters, contributing to a collaborative, low-stress, and secure work environment.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior designers, helping improve team output and quality.

Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Represent the design team in meetings with engineering groups, EPCs, and third-party stakeholders.

  • Ensure clear, effective communication of design intent and technical requirements across departments and with clients.

Process Improvement & Problem Solving

  • Act as a key troubleshooter on the shop floor—investigating and correcting fabrication or fitment issues in real time.

  • Bring creative and practical design solutions to ensure fast turnarounds on critical packages (e.g., completing multi-million-dollar drawing packages within 80 hours).

Continuous Development & Flexibility

  • While initially focused on design, this role offers long-term career progression into Project Management, depending on skill set and interest.

  • Stay flexible to cross over with project work, support during team vacations, and act as a backup for quality assurance when needed.
