The Opportunity

We are seeking a Manager, Accounting Projects & Innovation to lead process improvement and system initiatives across Northern Alberta. This newly created role provides the opportunity to shape how accounting processes evolve, drive efficiencies, and support system implementations that impact multiple divisions. The role combines financial expertise with project leadership, requiring someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and enjoys collaborating across departments.

Key Responsibilities

As Manager, Accounting Projects & Innovation, you will:

  • Assess & document accounting processes

    • Review approximately 15–20 distinct financial processes (GL, payables, receivables, reporting, project costing).

    • Create and update 5–10 SOPs, training guides, and process maps per quarter.

  • Lead system implementations and process improvements

    • Support at least 2 major system go-lives in the first 12–18 months.

    • Evaluate and optimize 10–15 manual workflows in Year 1, targeting a 20–25% improvement in processing time and accuracy.

    • Ensure effective adoption of ERP modules (NewStar or similar) and related reporting tools.

  • Drive project prioritization and execution

    • Manage 3–5 concurrent process or system projects, with average timelines of 3–6 months.

    • Define ROI, efficiency gains, or FTE savings before launch and deliver measurable outcomes.

  • Collaborate across business units

    • Partner with 4+ divisions (Builders, Properties, Communities, Mechanical) and multiple corporate functions.

    • Serve as a financial subject matter expert for both Operations and Corporate stakeholders.

  • Redesign and streamline processes

    • Engineer or modify at least 10 accounting workflows in Year 1 (split evenly between new designs and optimizations).

    • Standardize 5+ key reporting processes to enable automation and accuracy.

  • Support reporting and analytics initiatives

    • Oversee creation of 10+ new reporting templates in Year 1.

    • Partner with IT/Finance to reduce manual reporting by at least 30%.

  • Communicate and influence

    • Deliver presentations to leadership on a monthly basis.

    • Prepare business cases, project dashboards, and slide decks to support decision-making.

  • Build future capabilities

    • Mentor and provide informal guidance across a team of 20+ finance professionals, with the expectation to take on direct reports as the function grows.

    • Support development of a future Project Management Office (PMO) for finance transformation.

Ideal Candidate

You are an experienced accounting professional with strong process and system knowledge who enjoys solving problems and building scalable solutions. You bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce or related discipline.

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within real estate development, construction, or a related industry.

  • Strong understanding of job cost accounting, payables/receivables workflows, sales and cost codes, and financial analysis.

  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems (NewStar preferred), SQL for report building, and SharePoint workflow design.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deliver measurable process improvements.

  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and presentation skills.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $120,000 – $130,000/year

  • Bonus: Target 20% annually

  • Vacation: 3 weeks to start (4 weeks after 8 years, 5 weeks after 20 years)
