We’re hiring an Assistant Controller for a full-cycle accounting leadership role supporting a multi-entity international operation. This is a 12-month maternity leave contract with the potential for extension, based in Edmonton. The successful candidate will provide financial oversight, manage reporting across Canada, the U.S., and Chile, and support operational and project-based finance needs.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Finance Director, the Assistant Controller will play a key role in the timely delivery of consolidated financials, support for project accounting, regulatory compliance, and external audit preparation. You’ll lead a small Edmonton-based team while collaborating with international offices and cross-functional partners.
Key Responsibilities
Consolidated Financial Reporting
Review and analyze monthly consolidated financial statements across 3–7 entities.
Support accuracy and compliance with internal policies and reporting deadlines.
Audit & Tax Coordination
Act as lead contact for external auditors during quarterly reviews and annual audit cycles.
Support the preparation and delivery of financial data across North American tax jurisdictions.
Month-End Close & General Ledger Oversight
Ensure all journal entries are reviewed and approved—dozens per entity monthly.
Review over 200 monthly account reconciliations, most of which are schedule-driven and system-supported.
Assist the team with complex accounting entries and troubleshoot potential financial statement variances during close.
Project-Based Financial Support
Liaise with operations on job costing, reporting, and performance analysis for 1,000+ active projects ranging from $1K to multi-million-dollar scopes.
Provide financial expertise to support operations teams and project managers.
Systems & Tools
Leverage Microsoft Excel daily; familiarity with NetSuite and Power BI considered a strong asset.
Experience with Hyperion or similar consolidation tools is also beneficial.
Compliance & Process Improvement
Oversee month-end timelines (targeted completion by the 7th working day).
Collaborate with internal departments to implement consistent and efficient accounting practices.
Contribute to budgeting and forecasting activities (minimal involvement, largely FP&A owned).
Ideal Candidate Profile
CPA or equivalent accounting designation
5+ years of full-cycle accounting experience
2+ years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role
Strong understanding of project-based accounting
High proficiency in Microsoft Excel
Experience working across multiple jurisdictions and currencies
Effective communicator who can lead teams and support process improvements
Comfortable with minimal travel (less than 5% internationally)

Location: Edmonton, AB
Schedule: Office hours (approx. 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, flexibility available)
Work Setting: Primarily on-site; remote work permitted as needed
