About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Payroll Administrator to provide leave coverage during a busy turnaround season, with a high likelihood of permanent placement. The successful candidate will receive approximately one to two weeks of training before assuming primary responsibility for the full weekly payroll process. This role is well suited to a payroll professional who is comfortable working independently, managing project-based and unionized payroll, interpreting complex timesheets, and responding calmly when priorities and project requirements change. Direct Payworks experience is required.

Job Title: Payroll Administrator
Term: Full-time Contract, Immediate
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m
Compensation: $65,000 annually, based on experience and market alignment
Work Arrangement: Hybrid
Key Responsibilities
Full-Cycle Payroll Processing
Process weekly payroll for approximately 15 salaried employees and up to 80 unionized employees during peak periods
Enter and verify daily and weekly timesheets in Payworks
Review payroll data for accuracy before processing
Maintain accurate employee payroll records
Verify wage rates against current wage agreements and onboarding information
Process new hires, employee changes, terminations, and payroll corrections
Union, Project & Multi-Jurisdiction Payroll
Support employees working across multiple projects, job sites, and job numbers
Apply overtime, night-shift premiums, living-out allowances, travel reimbursements, and other special earnings
Review unusual or complex time allocations
Review union and field dues in Payworks
Complete manual remittance reviews using Excel reports
Payroll Reporting, Reconciliations & Remittances
Export payroll information from Payworks
Import payroll journal entries into QuickBooks
Complete month-end vacation reporting
Maintain organized payroll records and documentation
Provide accurate payroll information to the Director of Finance and internal teams
Employee & Internal Support
Respond to employee questions about missing hours and pay-stub discrepancies
Resolve payroll coding and other payroll-related issues
Work closely with Finance, Human Resources, project controls, accounts receivable, and other teams
Communicate clearly and professionally
Manage urgent payroll deadlines and changing project requirements
The Ideal Candidate
Required
2–3+ years of hands-on payroll experience
Full-cycle payroll processing or highly relevant payroll support experience
Direct experience using Payworks
Experience with unionized payroll
Working knowledge of QuickBooks
Strong attention to detail
Ability to identify errors in hours, rates, premiums, deductions, and project coding
Basic Microsoft Excel skills
Preferred
Payroll Compliance Professional (PCP) designation or progress toward certification
Experience with turnaround, construction, field-service, industrial, or project-based workforces
Familiarity with Records of Employment, WCB, pension remittances, and vacation reporting
