How To Use ChatGPT To Optimize Job Postings For Small Businesses

Let AI speed up your job posting process

With the tide of AI tools rising quickly, it’s important to remain well-versed to avoid falling too far behind. There’s a lot of hype, and if we’re being honest, the tools don’t quite live up. Yet.

However, for the small business, there are a few functions you want to be aware of and maybe incorporate into your toolkit. Optimizing job posts is one of them.

Here’s why. When you write a job post, you’re not just writing for the job seeker. You’ve got two audiences to keep in mind. One is the job seeker. The other is the search engine.

Job seekers won’t spend time sifting through 10+ Google search results pages. It would be surprising if they ventured past page 2, and my jaw would hit the floor if they went past page 3.

Keep that in mind. Job posts must be written to align with search engine criteria AND cater to the job seekers search intent and attention span. That means appearing at the top of search pages, having attractive formatting, informative points, and clear CTAs is the goal. It takes a lot of editing.

It’s the kind of editing that makes your eyes glaze over, and drool start to form at the edge of your mouth. Perfect to pass off to ChatGPT.

Here’s a quick 3 step process to supercharge your job posts.

1) Write your job description into a paragraph.

Start by writing down the job details. Don’t worry about formatting, word-choice, or run-on sentences. That’s Chat’s job. You’ve probably got some notes with the job details already. Just make sure all the details that matter are in there. Here’s a list of components you should include:

  • Job Title

  • Job Description

    • What is the role? What skills are required? What expectations or outcomes? What’s the salary? Standard hours?

  • About the Company

    • What is your business about?

  • Location

Pretty basic, right?

Here’s an example of a general labour role so you can see what things can look like at this point:

Hiring for a general labour position. The pay rate is $16-$18/hour. You’ll perform general site clean up, moving/loading/unloading materials. Potentially assisting in light construction when necessary. Removing debris and trash from the work site. Some tasks may require on-the-job training to use the equipment. This depends on the job site. The hours are Monday to Friday, 8 to 4. We’re a construction firm that has been operating in Edmonton, AB, for 60 years.

2) Get a list of Keywords for your job description.

Next, take the following prompt and your job description and paste them into ChatGPT. Chat will give you a long list of keywords.

Prompt:

Act like an SEO researcher. Give me a list of keywords for a job description I will provide you with that I can use to find a candidate for the position. Act like an expert in this field, include additional keywords that may not be in the job description. Make sure all the keywords are optimized for search engines. Here is the job description: [INCLUDE YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION]

Don’t worry about copying the output. We’ll refer back to it with the next prompt.

3) Write the job post.

Copy this prompt into Chat and let it do its work.

Prompt:

You are a professional recruiter and HR professional. You have a basic job description that you are optimizing to post on your website and across various job boards online. Take the basic job description from before and present it clearly, succinctly, and engagingly in job post format. Use bullet points and highlight sections that include a general job overview, responsibilities, qualifications, salary, hours, and about our company. Add any other sections that would fit with the job description. Use the keywords you provided above and work them into this job post. Optimize the job post for SEO, including H1 and H2 tags, so that it will rank on Google and Bing. Work the H1 and H2 tags into the post.

Chat will give you an output that looks a little like the following:

Simple and fast. Place it on your website or other job boards and move on to the 50 other things on your to-do list.

Hopefully, this helps. If you’re interested in taking this to the next level and lowering your days to fill open roles to 5 days, shoot us a message. We’re happy to connect.
