About

We’re hiring a Director of HR to lead the people function at a growing industrial services organization. This is a senior leadership role that blends business strategy with human capital development. The successful candidate will oversee a small but capable HR team, drive organizational culture, and build the frameworks for recruitment, development, and succession that will support the company’s long-term growth.

The Opportunity

As Director of Human Resources, you’ll set the tone and direction for all HR operations—from policy development and performance management to recruiting pipelines and succession strategies. You’ll work closely with operations and executive leadership to align people initiatives with business goals, championing a values-driven culture without compromising organizational priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • People Strategy & Team Development

    • Lead and mentor a 3-person HR team (Field Recruiter, Field Resource, Payroll/Benefits Admin).

    • Define performance expectations and leadership accountabilities.

    • Champion a leadership approach rooted in directional clarity, trust, and self-starting autonomy.

  • Recruitment & Succession Planning

    • Create structured recruiting systems to attract high-potential hires (co-op programs, post-secondary partnerships).

    • Develop internal career pathways and succession strategies across the organization.

    • Lead hiring for key positions including Project Managers, Project Coordinators, and Estimators.

  • Policy, Compliance & Governance

    • Refine and standardize HR policies, handbooks, and compliance protocols.

    • Lead initiatives supporting ESG and whistleblower policy implementation.

    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Canadian labor laws and employment standards.

  • Performance & Compensation

    • Implement a scalable compensation framework tied to core competencies and role performance.

    • Support and co-lead the annual performance review cycle (currently informal).

    • Develop metrics and documentation tools to measure talent development and retention impact.

  • Culture & Engagement

    • Facilitate team-building, morale programs, and employee engagement activities.

    • Support a strong company culture built on trust, autonomy, and growth mindset.

    • Conduct 1:1s and informal check-ins to continuously assess team morale.

  • Strategic Planning & Organizational Growth

    • Contribute to long-term growth strategy by aligning people initiatives with business expansion goals.

    • Drive HR’s role in supporting 30–50% growth over the next 3–5 years.

    • Support IT collaboration, ESG program evolution, and DEI initiatives.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • 5+ years’ experience as an HR Manager or Director

  • Strong generalist background in recruitment, performance management, compliance, and policy development

  • Ability to balance employee needs with business imperatives

  • Not necessarily a traditional HR professional—this role welcomes strong people leaders with the right mindset and values

  • Comfortable with autonomy, ambiguity, and building frameworks from the ground up

  • Skilled at coaching others, building relationships, and driving execution

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in HR or related field

  • CPHR designation preferred, not required

  • Strong understanding of Canadian employment law

  • Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills

  • Familiarity with workforce planning, compensation analysis, and HR systems

  • Experience supporting ESG or DEI initiatives is an asset

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $130,000–$140,000/year (flexible up to $160,000 for exceptional fit)

  • Profit Share: Begins after 2 years; 10% based on salary ratio

  • Pension: 5% matching contribution

  • Time Off: 3 weeks’ vacation (negotiable to 4 weeks), plus office closure during Christmas
